The Buffalo Series

The Buffalo Series Exhibit. This series grew out my love for the Buffalo or Tatonka meaning “Great One”. The Buffalo was the main food stay for the Indigenous people here on the North American Continent. The American Buffalo or Bison that we labeled it as is a magnificent animal. It was the life blood for the Native American people and the European man who came here to conquer these people almost exterminated the buffalo to the point of extinction. Luckily the Federal Government stepped in and saved the buffalo from extinction. Just as the Bald Eagle the Buffalo are no longer on the brink of extinction. In fact the meat from the buffalo is better for you because it is leaner and less fatty.

Here are two pieces from the series of 14 that I have created from photographs that I have taken of the Buffalo herd at the Wildlife Refuge in Commerce City. “The Sunset over the Buffalo” is actually a commentary piece because of the almost extinction of the Buffalo. The second piece is titled “The Lonely Buffalo”. It’s not much a commentary but the feeling that all of us have at different points in our lives. All of the pieces were taken apart and I utilized a painting technique that many artists use to create depth in their paintings. The various planes where each one is lighter or darker and alternating. By doing this even in photograph it can add more depth to photo.
